The graduate programme of the Department of English Language and Literature is designed to meet the demands of specialized literature researchers in higher education and also of the qualified students from various academic disciplines to pursue advanced level education. Graduate students may specialize in English Language and Literature along with applied linguistics. In general the program consists of the study of poetry, prose, drama, and the techniques of literary criticism. The courses generally offered are: Research Methods in Literary Studies, British Cultures and Literatures, American Cultures and Literatures, Postcolonial Cultures and Literatures, Theories and Development of the Novel, Poetry and Poetics, Comparative studies in Drama, and Studies in Theory and Criticism.

Kabul Koşulları
TURKISH STUDENTS Turkish citizens, who are willing to study Master of Arts (MA) Degree in this programme, must comply with the legal and educational requirements of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) as well as with the regulations for Graduate Education at Karabuk University. Information on application for graduate programs and admission requirements are announced on the web page of the university at the beginning of each academic year. In order to study in the graduate programme, the students are required to take the exam called “ALES” (the Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam), which is intermittently organized by the Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM). The accepted score is 60 out of 100 according to the nature of the programme. Besides, GRE or GMAT is also accepted as equivalent for ALES. Moreover, the students, willing to study in this graduate programme, must submit the score of 55 out of 100 from the foreign language exam organized by the Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM). The university applies foreign language exams for those who do not have a language score. The applicants have to meet additional program requirements defined by each academic programme.
FOREIGN STUDENTS The graduate programme also receives foreign students if they meet admission requirements. Foreign students must provide the following documents: • The high school diploma recognized by the Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK) • An acceptable ALES or GRE score. If the candidates do not have any of these scores, an entrance exam is given by the institute, and they must get the score of 70 out of 100. • An acceptable score from the Turkish language Learning Centre (TÖMER) with the level of A or B. If they do not have the satisfactory Turkish language score, they must take the Turkish language exam organized by the institute and get 70 out of 100. If they received their secondary education in Turkey, they are not asked to submit the Turkish language score. Access to Further Studies: Upon successful completion of this programme, students may apply to doctorate (third cycle) degree programmes in or related fields. According to Article 2/a of the National Regulations on Graduate Education, students are admitted to third cycle programmes taking into account their first and second cycle degree achievement levels and the scores on the subject-specific entrance examinations of the Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES), centrally organized by the Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM). Within the framework of the national regulations, regulations endorsed by the senate of each university stipulate the weight of ALES Examination results in the overall evaluation of candidates. Moreover, a second national requirement to apply for a third cycle degree programme is a satisfactory level of a foreign language, which must be 55 out of 100 from the Foreign Language Examination (UDS) or 65 from the Foreign language Proficiency Examination for State Employees (KPDS) organized by the Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM) or the equivalent scores obtained from other internationally recognised foreign language examinations such as TOEFL and IELTS.

The students who study in the programme are required to fulfil the following graduation requirements in order to get the PHD Degree in English Language and Literature: • The students must pass all the credited courses with at least a letter grade CB, together with non-credited courses with at least the letter grade G • They must obtain a total of 240 ECTS Credits. • They must achieve a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 75 out of 100 (at least 2.50 out of 4.00). • They must be successful in their seminars • They must prepare the PhD thesis and defend it successfully.
