About Programme

Medical Engineering; is involved in the research and development, design, manufacture, and operation of materials, instruments, devices, artificial organs, systems, and technologies used in healthcare. Although it is a new program in our country, medical engineers have been playing an important role in developing new techniques and devices to diagnose and treat diseases for many years. Medical Engineering, which provides a bridge between theoretical and applied engineering sciences and health and life, covers medicine, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electrical-electronic engineering, physics, chemistry, etc. includes interdisciplinary studies.

History
Turkey's first Department of Medical Engineering was established in 2013 within the Faculty of Engineering of Karabuk University. It started education in the 2013-2014 academic year and has admitted students to 1st and 2nd education programs with 30% English language of instruction, and 100% English 1st education programs. The Department of Medical Engineering, which has examples abroad, is the first department established in this field in Turkey. The department has 7 faculty members.
Qualification Awarded
Upon successful completion of English Preparotary education and all the courses in the 4-year curriculum, the students are awarded the Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Engineering
Admission Requirements
For Turkish Citizens:
(1) High School Diploma, (2) Placement through a centralised, nation-wide student selection and placement examination organized by Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to the programmes based on their composite scores consisting of the scores on the centralized exam and high school grade point averages.
For International Students:
(1) High School Diploma and its "Certificate of Equivalency” granted by the Turkish Ministry of National Education (MoNE). (2) Exam for International Student (YÖS) or international university entrance examinations such as SAT I, ACT, etc., recognised by the national authority in higher education, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). Candidates gain access to the programmes based on their scores obtained from YÖS or equivalent exams.
Higher Grade Transition
Upon successful completion of this programme, students may apply to second cycle degree or directly to integrated third cycle (doctorate) programmes.
Graduation Requirements
In order to successfully graduate from the Medical Engineering program and receive a bachelor's degree, students must obtain at least 240 ECTS at the end of their 4-year undergraduate education. Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The Medical Engineering Department has given the first Medical Engineer graduates of Turkey in 2017. Graduates are applying for medical equipment/materials manufacturing/design companies and health institutions (Aysam, SBÜ METÜM, 4C Medical, Hipokrat Medical, OSTİM, Turkish Public Hospitals Institution, Biomedical/Technical Service/Medical Device Units etc.). As it is outlined in the "Regulation on Testing, Control and Qualification of Medical Devices" and in Appendix-2 published on 5 June 2015 in the Official Gazette the graduates from our Department are given clearly the authority to work in the related field: one of the mentioned departments in the statement "The specialist is required to graduate from the departments designated for the authorization groups in Appendix-2" is "Medical Engineering" department.
Assessment and Grading
A midterm and a general exam are held each semester. Other parameters that can be used in measurement and evaluation are included in the information package of each course.
