About Programme
Goals: The goal of the Bachelor’s programme in the department of English Language and Literature is to supply students with an advanced level of English language strengthened with critical reading, writing and thinking abilities for their success in both academic life and professional life. The department also aims at improving adequate knowledge in English literature, history, culture, and politics through contemporary critical and interdisciplinary approaches.

Objectives: The objective of the (programme) is to enrich students’ knowledge of English language and literature through theoretical and practical teaching as well as through contemporary critical and interdisciplinary approaches, together with the attempt to make better their reading, writing, thinking and critical skills through all the teaching and learning activities.

History
The Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Letters offers a 4-year Undergraduate programme. The department started accepting students during 2009-2010 academic year. There are two active undergraduate programmes since that date.

The medium of instruction is English, excluding compulsory and elective courses students must take from other departments.

All qualifying students are required to take an English Proficiency Test or demonstrate competence in English. Those who are successful begin their studies in the Department. Students who fail the proficiency test are required to complete the English Preparatory Programme of the School of Foreign Languages at Karabuk University.

The main objective of the Undergraduate Programme of the Department of English Language and Literature is to teach English literature and culture, train researchers, and promote research in this field.

Admission Requirements
For Turkish Citizens:
(1) High School Diploma, (2) Placement through a centralised, nation-wide student selection and placement examination organized by Assessment, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to the programmes based on their composite scores consisting of the scores on the centralized exam and high school grade point averages.
For International Students:
(1) High School Diploma and its "Certificate of Equivalency” granted by the Turkish Ministry of National Education (MoNE). (2) Exam for International Student (YÖS) or international university entrance examinations such as SAT I, ACT, etc., recognised by the national authority in higher education, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). Candidates gain access to the programmes based on their scores obtained from YÖS or equivalent exams.
Higher Grade Transition
Upon successful completion of this programme, students may apply to second cycle degree or directly to integrated third cycle (doctorate) programmes.

Graduation Requirements
In order to qualify for the award of Bachelor’s Degree, the student must complete
-all courses in the curriculum,
-a minimum CGPA of 2.00/4.00 (50/100) and 240 ECTS and no failing grades.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The graduates of English Language and Literature with teaching certificates may become English teachers or lecturers in many state and private schools and universities. Graduates are also able to find jobs which require cultural and literary knowledge, such as those in tourism, ministries, banks, state and private media institutions. They can also work as translators, writers and/or editors. In addition to the positions in secondary schools and academic institutions, they may work at various state and private companies, and international offices and the European Union departments of the ministries.
