History
The Doctoral Program in Sociology at Karabük University was established in 2023 to provide advanced research and training in the field of sociology.
Qualification Awarded
Students who successfully complete this program are awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sociology. Graduates attain the academic competence to conduct independent research and demonstrate advanced theoretical and methodological expertise in the field of sociology.
Admission Requirements
For candidates applying to the PhD Program in Sociology with a master’s degree (with thesis), admission is based on a weighted evaluation of the following components: 60% ALES score, 30% graduate GPA, and 10% foreign language score (YDS, YÖKDİL, or an equivalent exam recognized by the Council of Higher Education).

The final score is calculated out of 100 points, and candidates must obtain a minimum of 60 points to be considered successful. Applicants are ranked according to their success scores, and students are admitted within the announced quota; a waiting list equal to the quota is also announced.

Applicants are required to take a written examination, which is graded on a 100-point scale. Candidates who do not attend the written exam or score below 75 points are considered unsuccessful and are not admitted to the program.
Higher Grade Transition
Graduates who successfully complete the PhD Program in Sociology may pursue post-doctoral research, participate in academic projects, or apply for faculty positions in universities and research institutions.

They may also work as senior researchers, consultants, or project coordinators in public institutions, research centers, or international organizations related to social sciences.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate from the PhD Program in Sociology, students must successfully complete a minimum of 240 ECTS credits (for those admitted with a master’s degree) or 300 ECTS credits (for those admitted with a bachelor’s degree).

Students are required to fulfill all course requirements, maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.00, and successfully pass the doctoral qualifying examination. After passing the qualifying exam, candidates must prepare an original doctoral dissertation under the supervision of an advisor and successfully defend it before the examination committee to be awarded the PhD degree.

The dissertation must adhere to scientific research ethics and be approved by the Graduate School for the degree to be conferred.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Graduates of the PhD Program in Sociology can pursue careers as academics, researchers, or scientific consultants at universities and research institutions. They may also be employed in public institutions and governmental organizations (such as the Ministry of Family and Social Services, Directorate General of Migration Management, Turkish Statistical Institute, and municipalities), research centers, think tanks, NGOs, and private sector organizations in areas including social research, policy development, human resources, communication, and social analysis.

The program equips graduates with advanced skills in academic research and applied sociological analysis, enabling them to contribute to national and international research projects, social policy development, and institutional consultancy.
Assessment and Grading
Assessment and evaluation in the PhD Program in Sociology are conducted in accordance with the Karabük University Graduate Education Regulations.

During the coursework phase, students are evaluated based on components such as mid-term exams, assignments, presentations, term projects, and final exams. The final grade for each course is calculated according to the criteria determined by the course instructor.

To successfully complete a course, students must obtain a minimum score of 70 out of 100. The final grade is calculated by weighting 40% of in-term assessments and 60% of the final exam.

After completing all coursework, students must pass the doctoral qualifying examination. Those who succeed submit and defend a thesis proposal, and upon completing and successfully defending an original doctoral dissertation, they are awarded the PhD degree. All thesis works are evaluated within the framework of scientific research ethics.
