About Programme
The graduate programme of the Department of English Language and Literature is designed to meet the demands of specialized literature researchers in higher education and also of the qualified students from various academic disciplines to pursue advanced level education. Graduate students may specialize in English Language and Literature along with applied linguistics. In general the program consists of the study of poetry, prose, drama, and the techniques of literary criticism. The courses generally offered are: Research Methods in Literary Studies, British Cultures and Literatures, American Cultures and Literatures, Postcolonial Cultures and Literatures, Theories and Development of the Novel, Poetry and Poetics, Comparative studies in Drama, and Studies in Theory and Criticism.

Qualification Awarded
Upon successful completion of all the necessary courses in the curriculum, the students are awarded PhD Degree in English Language and Literature.
Admission Requirements
For Turkish Citizens:
Second Cycle (Master’s) Degree diploma with thesis, (2) A minimum ALES score of 55 or equivalent international examinations scores for graduate-level programmes such as GRE, GMAT, etc., recognised by YÖK. (3) A minimum score of 55 in accepted foreign language proficiency exams. Candidates gain access to the programmes based on their composite scores consisting of second cycle degree grade point averages, ALES and foreign language exam.
For International Students:
Second Cycle Degree diploma with thesis obtained from universities recognised by YÖK. Candidates gain access to the programmes based on their second cycle degree grade point averages.

Graduation Requirements
In order to qualify for the award of a doctorate degree, a student must have completed
- 7 courses with minimum 21 local credits,
- one seminar and pass its oral examination,
- submission of a Ph.D. Thesis and pass its oral examination
- have had a minimum CGPA of 3.00/4.00 and 240 ECTS and no failing grades.

Graduates of English Language and Literature master programme have a wide range of career opportunities before them as seen below: • They can choose to be academicians at universities • They can become English Language School instructors at universities • They can work as English teachers not only at the primary and secondary schools of Ministry of Turkish National Education but also at the primary and secondary schools across the world. • They can also become translators in the private and public sectors, including international companies, embassies, government offices, banks and so on. • They can work in the media, newspaper or television networks, cinema sector, journalism and advertising. • They can also find jobs in the areas of tourism, public relations, international relations, and human resources.
